An Outline to Civil Lawsuits in California

You are sitting at home minding your own business, when you hear a knock on the door. You open the door and a person asks for your name and if you live there, then hands you some paperwork. If you don’t take the paperwork, it’s dropped in front of you (which is good enough) and now you have been served with a lawsuit. The paperwork usually consists of a Summons and Complaint. It provides information on what court is handling the matter, the allegations against you, and the name and contact information of the attorney representing the other party.
